Thoughts on 1000 Unique Beers
Last week I passed 1000 unique beer check-ins on Untappd. That’s not too bad, especially considering that I’ve only been a member since January, 2011. I’ve been looking through my list recently and have some thoughts I’d like to share. I know that opinions are like a-holes–everyone has one, but I want to share some of mine now that I’ve earned the “Extraordinary” badge.
I’ve had some great beers along the way: Dogfish Head 90 & 120min IPA, Russian River Pliny the Elder & Blind Pig, Cigar City Hunahpu, Williamsburg Aleworks Bourbon Barrel Poter, Founders CBS, etc. etc. However, I’ve also had some “not so great” beers: Buffalo Bill’s Orange Blossom, Dominion Hop Mountain, Newcastle Summer Ale, Karl Strauss Endless Summer Lite. Perhaps the worst was the Orange Blossom. To me, the orange flavor did not mix well with a cream ale. I don’t mind too much, though., these beers have been pretty cheap. As you may have read in other posts, I have a beer label collection that is approaching 1700 labels. In my quest to try new beers sometimes I hit, and sometimes, well, I miss. Overall I have found many beers that I’ve really enjoyed so the good definitely outweighs the bad.
I’ve noticed in my beer ratings on twitter ( #novarvw ) that except for occassional outliers it generally holds that a great craft brewery tends to make great craft beers: Boulevard, Cigar City, Dogfish Head, Lost Abbey, Sierra Nevada, etc. There may be a beer or two from them that fails to live up to what you would expect but that doesn’t happen often.
I’ve made some good friends through my problem with love of beer. There is a great community out there that can be opinionated at times, but also respects the opinions of others. The best part has been sharing the experience with others; especially getting the change to hang out with fellow beer lovers at events like The Beer Circle’s first beer tour of Eastern PA. Stay tuned for information on another event in mid/late August.
