Back in January, Russ did a review of two Hardywood Craft Brewing releases, Gingerbread Stout and Bourbon-barrel Aged Gingerbread Stout. Recently I headed down for the release of Hoplar, an IPA conditioned on Virginia Poplar wood. This post will deal more with the experience at the brewery rather than a review of Hoplar itself.
The weather was perfect for the release. It was sunny and in the mid-50s. Festivities were to kick off at 1PM and … Read entire article »

Last weekend, Greg, Russ and Kenton made the trip to beautiful northwestern PA to see the brand new Voodoo Brewpub and hopefully buy some delicious barrel aged beers. This weekend was no normal weekend, it was the long awaited Barrel Room Collection release. For our faithful readers, you’ll remember our attempt to liveblog the event, but we figured it warranted a full writeup as well.
A lot of people speculated as to when everyone would start to line … Read entire article »

Ladies and Gentlemen this is not a drill. I repeat, Voodoo Brewery is set to release their Barrel Room Collection this weekend. Wait, you may ask, isn’t there basketball to watch?! Why yes, I would reply, and what better to go with buzzer beaters and Cinderella than Big Black Voodoo Daddy and a little Black Magick?
Imagine the beer pictured to the right, but aged in various bourbon barrels. Don’t worry, we had to sit down … Read entire article »

On December 30th, Bullfrog Brewing announced on their Facebook page the release of OUD 15, with only 350 bottles available at $20 a bottle and a 3 bottle limit. I was really excited, because though I was in Illinois at the time, I would be back in Pennsylvania by the release on January 4th, and Williamsport is only a short drive from State College. OUD 15 was described as a…

A few weeks back I made the trip down to Richmond, Virginia to check out Hardywood Park Craft Brewery and their bourbon barrel aged Gingerbread Stout release. It was a bit out of my way, but the thought of a gingerbread stout aged in bourbon barrels carried me through. The line wasn’t all that long when I rolled in, and I had my beers (and glasses) within an hour. After which, I pulled off a … Read entire article »

Since adding Kenton to our regular cast of characters, we have been looking for a reason to get a bunch of us together for in-person introductions and a chance to share some celebratory beers. Figuring the weekend that held Cantillon’s Zwanze Day was our best bet, plans were set in motion and our cellars shivered at the destruction that was to come.
Zwanze Day is in its second year; Cantillon’s head brewer Jean Van Roy sees … Read entire article »

When I saw the below tweet from Big Hunt bartender Dave Coleman I knew I had no choice but to trek into the District last Thursday. I mean come on, two bourbon barrel aged offerings and a Belgian Strong Dark Ale (BSDA) weighing in at 14% ABV? You’re pulling at my heartstrings.
Duclaw Brewing Company is known for their big beers (see Colossus, a 22% ABV Imperial IPA), but none had graced my palate with its presence … Read entire article »

When I finally received word that Ithaca would be releasing LeBleu, the sought-after blueberry American Wild Ale, I began making plans right away. Typically, this beer is released on New Years’ Eve. I hadn’t made the trip before, but I was planning to go this previous New Year’s Eve when Ithaca postponed its release, saying that they wild ale simply was not yet ready. Based on the fact that the brewery stated that there would … Read entire article »

A group of friends and had enjoy a semi-working happy hour at Rustico Ballston on February 27th for the release of Great Lakes Brewing Company in Northern Virginia. Naturally, because their beers are available in DC and PA, pretty much the entire group was pretty familiar with their offerings. Never ones to turn down free beer glasses, we decided to stop by anyway.
They had a couple reps from the brewery come out and they passed … Read entire article »
